At one point of this long senior year I really did not want to go to college.

And when I told people they thought me crazy. “why the hell wouldn’t you want to go to college?” “dude, you’re just lazy.” “you have such a great opportunity that people would die for.” but all these words just went through one ear and out the other.

As of now, I am planning to attend college but I feel like people don’t see life as something more than just that. What’s the reason behind going? Attaining money to do things later in your life. Getting a career that will stabilize your life. Having a degree that shows how smart you are and how hard you’ve worked. That’s all great and everything but honestly, all that doesn’t matter to me. And I feel like it shouldn’t matter to anyone else, either.

My mom tells me that I should go so I won’t be poor and live like a bum, but to that I think ‘I don’t care if I’m poor as long as I’m happy’. Money will come and go and really shouldn’t matter to you, nor should it ever matter. Things that matter are people, experiences, and yourself. I live with a single mom whom works a part time job and to the governments standards, we are on the lower end of the wealth chart (mind that we live in fairfax county) and yet I can still afford things like a new computer and a running car. People always have an excess amount of money, and with that they buy useless shit that they don’t need and still have some saved up. So you really don’t even need a college degree to have things that you want or to do things you want so stop stressing over it. And no, I’m not telling you not to attend college. You should attend, and get a degree, and then do things you want with your life before you get into a career that you’ll be in for a long long time.

So now here we are, close to the end of our senior year and ready to go off to college. I just want you to know that, in the end of our lives, things like how much money you had or how many things you owned won’t matter. All that matters is that you are happy. Do what ever it takes to be happy. Don’t get a job just because it pays well. Do something you love and enjoy every second of it.
